"Enligh10ment"
- HIFA
2009 theme explained
Enlightenment
is the striving for and
achievement of greater knowledge and understanding, the process through
which we ‘see the light’…
The
evolution of HIFA over the last 10 years has been a shared journey of
progressive enlightenment, a varied road trip in pursuit of
thought-provoking creative endeavour, offering escape as well as
empathy, fantasy as well as reason, beauty as well as realism.
Our 2009
Festival is a snapshot from an important destination along the way.
This
year we ask you to consider different forms of enlightenment. We invite
you to be part of diverse creative perspectives that bring to light
ideas about where we are and where we are going.
We urge you to come
together in a spirit of blazing communal solidarity and to revel in the
vibrant power of the arts to engage feelings in us that that are often
beyond rational explanation and yet are powerfully illuminating.
So,
at a time when all Zimbabweans are seeking ‘a light at the end of the
tunnel’, the lightening of our individual burdens and an ethos of
reason, clarity and resolution, HIFA presents our largest and most
luminous Festival yet. We plan to prominently celebrate our 10th
anniversary but also to turn a spotlight on all of us – our fears, our
sadness, our joys and ultimately on our hope for a brighter future.

Was
so much joy to attend a wonderful event like the International Fastival
of Arts in Harare in 2008, was even more satisfaction to come back and
to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Festival in the company of
many great artists and good friends, who affectionately followed us
during this year faraway.
Despite the known problems afflicting Zimbabwe, during this week have
been hosted in Harare over 120 shows
and 20 workshops of music, dance and visual arts, with artists from
every continent.
We, in the company of Sicilian pianist
Fausto Quintabà have represented the kind of classical chamber
music with works by Mozart, Brahms, Fauré, Schumann and Turina,
and the Goldberg Variations of Bach for strings in the version of the
Maestro Giuranna. Both critics and the audience showed great
enthusiasm for all our performances and at the end of each concert,
there was a standing ovation.
We have also partecipated at one of the most awaited events of the
Festival, followed by thousands of people: the Opera Gala on the Main
Stage; it has been a real pleasure to work with young and splendid
professionists as Lee Bisset (soprano), Lynn
Boudreau ( soprano), Alenka Ponjavic (mezzo-soprano), Andrew Sritheran
(tenor), Hakan Vramsmo (baritone).
We are very grateful at the Italian Embassy in Harare for giving us the
opportunity to replicate an artistically and humanly
really extraordinary experience and we always remember
with admiration and gratitude all the friends of the Festival Staff:
with passion, dedication and seriously they achieved an event of
incredible emotional intensity.

"...
this music ensamble captivated the audience in masterful pieces that
received sounding applause on each presented composition. The
repertoire was served out beautifully as the music instruments jelled
in perfectly and the instrumentalists showed a great standard of
mastery and excellence. For all the starved classic music lovers, this
is a show not to miss."
